Punjab Schools to Close for a Week as Heatwave Looms
LAHORE - In a move to prioritize student safety during an anticipated heatwave, the Punjab government has announced the closure of all public and private schools in the province from May 25th to May 31st, 2024.
This decision comes after warnings from the Meteorological Department of severe heatwaves gripping the country in the coming days. The scorching temperatures, coupled with the possibility of dust storms and thunderstorms,

prompted the Punjab government to take precautionary measures.
"The well-being of our students is paramount," declared a government spokesperson. "By closing schools during this period of extreme heat, we aim to minimize health risks associated with heatstroke and ensure their safety."
While schools will be closed, pre-scheduled examinations will be allowed to proceed as planned. However, authorities have emphasized the importance of implementing "necessary precautions" to safeguard students during exams. These precautions likely include adjusting exam timings to cooler parts of the day and ensuring proper ventilation and hydration facilities in examination halls.
This closure follows an earlier decision by the Punjab government to reduce school hours across the province from May 18th to May 31st. Additionally, schools were instructed to ensure proper functioning of fans and water coolers, and to avoid any outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
